QUICK FACTS:
  • Born and raised a free woman of color on March 11, 1812 in New Orleans, LA
  • Died at the age of 50 in 1862
  • Began teaching in a local Catholic school at the age of 14
  • Sold her fortunes and used the proceeds to found the Sisters of the Holy Family in 1842
    • Purpose to nurse the sick, care for the poor, and instruct the ignorant
    • She founded the order after being rejected by the Ursuline and Carmelite nuns because of her race
  • Opened the first Catholic home for the elderly
  • Descendant of slaves
  • Cause for Canonization officially opened in 1989
  • Sainthood Phase: "Venerable"
  • Remaining phases: "Blessed" and "Saint"
  • The first US native born African American whose cause for canonization has been opened by the Catholic Church
